Panthers advance to GSAC semifinals with last minute win over Piedmont Oct. 30, 2007
DEMOREST, Ga. - Satomi Omae scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in the final minute, to lift LaGrange College to a 2-1 win over Piedmont College in the first round of the GSAC Championship Tournament on Tuesday at Walker Field. The win puts the Panthers (6-9-1) back at Piedmont for Friday's semifinal game against top-seeded Maryville College at 1 p.m.
It was the second win of the year for the Panthers over the Lady Lions (5-11). The teams split their two regular season meetings. The Panthers won 2-0 at Piedmont on Sept. 20, while the Lady Lions won by the same score in LaGrange on Oct. 18.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Panthers did not have a shot on goal in the half. Panther goalkeeper Jennifer Eby made all three of her saves in the game in the first half. She made her final save of the half her best, stopping Lauren Dodd's shot from inside the box.
Omae broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute. Omae's shot to the near post beat goalkeeper Katelyn Induni. Piedmont answered the Omae's goal a minute later. Lauren Dodd scored on an assist from Sara Lindsley. It remained tied until Omae go the game-winner in the 89th minute.
The game-winner was created as the Panthers were putting pressure on the Piedmont defense. Stephanie McRae sent a cross pass across the Piedmont goal. Induni could not control the ball and Omae kicked the loose ball into the net. The two goals gave Omae eight for the season, which is second on the team.
The Panthers lost both regular season meetings with Maryville. The Lady Scots won 5-0 at LaGrange on Sept. 29 and 5-1 at Maryville on Oct. 10.
