Panthers fall to Emory & Henry, 3-2 Sept. 10, 2006
The LaGrange men's soccer team's late comeback bid fell short in a 3-2 loss to Emory & Henry at Panther Field on Sunday. The Panthers (1-1) had to play without leading scorer Kojo Cole-Kesse, who left the game with an injury in the 18th minute.
Emory & Henry's Elliott Anderson started the scoring in the seventh minute with a short shot into the right side of the net to give the Wasps (4-0-1) a 1-0 advantage. They carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the 71st minute, the Wasps increased their lead to 2-0. Austin Helm scored from eight yards out with an assist from Luke Lanier.
The Panthers got on the board for the first time nine minutes later. A foul by the Wasps in the box set up a penalty kick by Zak Turner. Goalkeeper Matt Martinez stopped the penalty kick, but Turner stuck in the rebound to cut the Wasps' lead to 2-1.
The comeback continued as Patrick Kaney tied the game with six minutes left on the clock. He dribbled 25 yards downfield and scored off a cross from 35 yards out for the tying goal.
Emory & Henry answered with the winning goal two minutes later. Anderson scored unassisted for his second goal of the game to put the Wasps ahead to stay.
In the 89th minute, the Panthers had a chance to send the game into overtime with a corner kick. Forward Wes Morton's kick was on target, but Kaney just missed the header for a possible goal.
The Wasps had 30 shots, 19 in the second half along with 14 shots on goal. LaGrange had 14 shots, nine in the second half with only five shots on goal. Baker finished the game with 11 saves for the Panthers. Martinez had three saves for the Wasps.
