Panthers fall on Senior Night
Oct. 6, 2006
The Panthers men's soccer team lost to Averett Universtiy 2-0 on Senior Night at Panther Field.
The loss was their eighth straight of the season and their scoreless streak extends to six games. They have not scored since they played Emory & Henry on Sept. 19th.
It was a physical game, filled with over 35 fouls, two yellow cards and a red card by the Panthers.
After a scoreless first half, Averett (2-7) got on the board in the 48th minute off a corner kick to make the score 1-0. Seven minutes later senior Zak Turner was called for a foul in the box, which led to a successful penalty kick that gave the Cougars an insurance goal to give them a 2-0 advantage.
The Panthers, who drop to 1-8 on the season, had an opportunity to score off a penalty kick by Kojo Cole-Kesse, but could not convert. Kesse had a second opportunity on the rebound, but was turned away again by Cougars' goalkeeper Bryan Phelps to preserve his first shutout of the season.
The Panthers were forced to play down the rest of the contest as senior Cole Zimmerman was ejected from the contest after drawing a red card in the 82nd minute.
Junior goalkeeper Jason Baker had nine saves for the Panthers.
The men will travel to Averett on Thursday, Sept. 12 for a rematch starting at 4 p.m. and then travel to Hampton-Sydney the following day with the match set for 2:30 p.m.
