Oct. 3, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. - LaGrange College got its fall schedule off to a solid start at the Greensboro College Invitational. The Panthers finished third in the two-day 36-hole  tournament at the Meadowland Golf Club.

Huntingdon College won the tournament with a two-day total of 575. The Hawks edged nine-time national champion Methodist by one shot. The Panthers were only four shots back of Huntingdon with a tournament total of 579. Rounding out the top five were Washington & Lee and Guilford College. The tournament featured five of the top 10 teams according to the Golfstat NCAA Division III ratings.

"This was an awesome start to our season," head coach Lee Richter said. "This may have been our best ever tournament score. This tournament has many of the teams we will be competing against for a national bid in the spring, so it was huge for us to play like we did."

In Tuesday's final round, the Panthers had three rounds of 73 and two rounds of 74. The Panthers had the third lowest round of the day Tuesday as a team. Sophomore Ryan Willis led the Panthers with scores of 69-73 for a total of 142. Willis earned all-tournament honors after tying for third in the individual standings. Andy Kauhnun followed Willis with rounds of 72-73 for a 145 total. Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers were: Bo Tiller (72-74=146), Anthony Yacovazzi (73-73=146) and Freddie Uribe (81-74=155).

The Panthers return to Greensboro for the Tom O'Briant Invitational hosted by Guilford College on Oct. 9-10. The 36-hole tournament will be held at the Greensboro Country Club's The Farm course.
