Panthers endure difficult second round at NCAA championship May 14, 2009
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. LaGrange College endured a difficult second round Thursday at the NCAA Division III Championship. The Panthers slipped nine spots to 14th after carding a team score of 310 over the challenging Dye course at the PGA Golf Club.
Despite the trying day, the Panthers are only five shots back of 10th place St. John's (Minn.) and made the team cut for the third straight year. Top-ranked Huntingdon is one stroke ahead in 13th place. First round leader Methodist slipped to second, seven shots behind LaVerne.
Senior Ryan Willis paced the Panthers with a two-over par round of 74. After back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12, Willis finished the round with five pars and a birdie at 17. Sophomore Adam Garrett followed Willis with a four-over par 76. Garrett birdied two of the first four holes on the back nine, finishing at even par over the final nine holes.
Senior Anthony Yacovazzi finished with a six-over par 78. Alex Elorriaga carded an 82 and Bo Tiller had an 86.
The Panthers return to the Dye course for Friday's third round. They will be paired up with Skidmore and Huntingdon for the round. The first group of three tees off at noon.
