Panthers go on the road to face NCAA Division II Brevard Oct. 19, 2007
This Week's Opponent The Panthers travel to Brevard, N.C. to face NCAA Division II Brevard College. The Tornados, like the Panthers, are a second-year program. They come into the game with a 1-6 record. The Tornadoes fell to Tusculum 30-7 last week at Homecoming. The Tornados defeated Chowan 45-7 on Sept. 22 for their only win of the season.
Series Notes This is the second meeting between the two schools. Brevard won 35-27 at Callaway Stadium last season.
The Coaches Paul Robinson is in his first year as head coach of the Tornados.
LaGrange's Todd Mooney is 0-17 in his second season as a head coach.
Last Meeting Brevard rallied in the fourth quarter for a 35-27 win over the Panthers. In a game between two first year programs, Brevard capitalized on LaGrange turnovers and costly penalties. The Tornados forced four turnovers and turned three of those into touchdowns. The loss offset the Panthers' best offensive yardage and point production game of the season. The Panthers' 344 yards of total offense and 27 points were season highs. Nick Langley and Bryan Turner scored on touchdown passes for a 20-14 halftime lead. Brevard took the lead in the third quarter to go up 21-20. Brad Burchett scored from the two with 12 seconds left in the quarter for the Panthers for a 27-21 lead. Brevard rallied in the fourth quarter with two scores to take a 35-27 lead.
Last Week's Recap Brevard fell to Tusculum 30-7 for Homecoming. Tusculum finished the game with 618 yards of total offense. Brevard was held to 193 yards of total offense, 179 coming on the ground. John Taylor led Brevard with 64 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Tusculum led 30-0 before Donald Hudson scored to prevent the shutout. Mississippi College overpowered the Panthers 50-7 at Callaway Stadium. Mississippi raced to a 36-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Adam Shaffer threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns for Mississippi. The Panthers' defense gave up a season-high 562 yards of total offense. The Panthers were held to a season-low 127 yards of total offense. Mississippi held the Panthers to 29 yards rushing and 98 yards passing. Mario Wallace had 136 all-purpose yards for the Panthers. Justin Pair led the Panther defense with 11 tackles, including two quarterback sacks. Brevard Statistics The Tornados are led by junior runnig back John Taylor. Taylor leads the team with 515 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. He had a season-high 216 yards rushing against Shorter.
LaGrange Statistics Mario Wallace is ranked eighth in all-purpose yars in the NCAA Division III statistics. Wallace is averaging 190.3 all-purpose yards per game. He is 18th in punt returns (14.0 yds per return) and 44th in kick returns (24.8 yds per return). As a team, the Panthers are 24th in punt returns, averaging 13.25 yards per return.
Brevard Defensive Leaders Linebacker Elliott Collins leads the Tornados with 46 total tackles.
LaGrange Defensive Leaders Defensive back Jeremy Pickens continues to lead the Panthers with 49 total tackles. Justin Pair has 47 total tackles. He is tied for the team lead with Richard Okpani with seven tackles for losses and with George Okpani with 3.5 quarterback sacks. The Panthers have 15 quarterback sacks after getting 10 for the entire 2006 season.
Tough Schedule The Panthers first seven opponents this season have a combined record of 32-13. Louisiana College (2-4) has the only losing record by an opponent played this season.The Panthers last three opponents have a combined record of 6-15.
Common Opponent Both Brevard and LaGrange have played Shorter this season. The Tornados lost at home to the Hawks 24-21 on Sept. 1. The Panthers lost 38-12 to the Hawks on the road Sept. 15.
