Panthers host Louisiana College on Saturday Sept. 27, 2007
Louisiana College visits Callaway Stadium for the first time. The Wildcats, members of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference, are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They are coming off a 41-34 ASC road loss to then #20 Hardin-Simmons last week.
Series Notes Louisiana leads the series 1-0. The Wildcats won 50-7 last season in Pineville, La.
The Coaches Dennis Dunn is in his second season with the Wildcats. Last season, the Wildcats were 4-5, including a 2-5 mark in the ASC. Dunn came to Louisiana College from Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La., where he compiled a 200-39 record and won nine state championships in three different classifications.
LaGrange's Todd Mooney is 0-14 in his second season as a head coach.
Last Meeting Louisiana College exploded for 35 second quarter points and went on to a 50-7 win at Bill Bates Stadium in Pineville, La. Louisiana had 523 yards of total offense in the game, 343 coming in the decisive first half. Quarterback Ben McLaughlin was 15-for-20 in the game for 261 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. In the first half, Mario Wallace's 38-yard kickoff return set the Panthers up at the Wildcats' 43. The Panthers needed only three plays to get into to the end zone to cut the Wildcats' lead to 15-7. Louisiana took control of the game with two quick touchdowns in a 39 second span following the Panthers' score.
Last Week's Recap Louisiana College's fourth quarter rally came up short as the Wildcats fell to No. 20 Hardin-Simmons 41-34. The Wildcats had 554 yards of total offense but four turnovers led to 21 points by Hardin-Simmons. Receiver Taylor Huffman had a career game with a single-game school record 14 receptions for 166 yards. Quarterback Ben McLaughlin threw for 443 yards and three touchdowns. The Panthers fell 39-14 to No. 16 Bridgewater last week at Callaway Stadium. Drew Carter's short touchdown pass to Erik Miller tied the game at 7-7. The Eagles scored the next 32 points to lead 39-7 after three quarters. The Panthers had a season-high 315 yards of total offense. They rushed for over 100 yards as a team for the first time, finishing with 113. Carter passed for 202 yards, while Brandon Crawford had 95 yards rushing.
Louisiana Statistics McLaughlin has thrown for 872 yards in three games with six touchdowns to lead the Wildcat offense. He leads the ASC in passing yards per game averaging 283.7 yards per game. Louisiana leads the ASC and is seventh in the NCAA Division III statistics in passing offense, averaging 329 yards per game. Huffman leads the ASC and is ninth in NCAA Division III statistics with 8.7 receptions per game.
LaGrange Statistics The Panthers' passing game is in the top 100 in NCAA Division III. The Panthers are averaging 207.8 yards passing per game, which is 92nd nationally in Division III. Carter is 52nd in Division III with 740 yards passing in four games. Mario Wallace is sixth in punt returns in Division III, averaging 19.6 yards per return. Wallace also ranks 27th in all-purpose yards, averaging 168.5 yards per game. Despite averaging only 44 rushing yards per game, the Panthers improved their rushing total for the third straight game against Bridgewater. After allowing 20 sacks in the first three games, the Panther offensive line allowed only one against Bridgewater.
Louisiana Defensive Leaders Linebacker Stephen Jackson and defensive back Donovan Williams each have 18 total tackles to lead the Wildcats' defense.
LaGrange Defensive Leaders Defensive back Jeremy Pickens and linebacker Richard Okpani each have 24 total tackles to lead the Panthers. Linebacker Justin Pair had four tackles for losses and a quarterback sack against Bridgewater. The Panthers have 10 quarterback sacks in four games, equaling their 2006 season total. The defense is allowing over 100 yards of total offense less per game than at this point last year.
