Panthers remain winless in GSAC  with 70-58 loss to Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville College topped LaGrange College 70-58 on Saturday. The Panthers dropped to 5-17 on the season and 0-4 in the GSAC. The Scots upped their record to 17-4 and are tied for first in the GSAC with a 3-1 record.

Joe Cromwell led the Panthers with 16 points. Marcus Vaughn and Nic Whitfield each had 10 points. Whitfield had a game-high 11 rebounds to complete his double-double.

Greg Hernandez led Maryville with a game-high 21 points. Hernandez recorded his 1,000 career point during the game. Eryk Watson added 15 points for the Scots.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the game. The Panthers did not score until Stephen Tuck's jumper with 13:44 left in the first half, but trailed only 4-2. The Panthers took a 15-12 lead on three straight baskets by Cromwell, Vaughn and Stephen Spivey.

Maryville came back to take the lead for good. The Scots led by as many as 13 in the first half. Tuck scored before the end of the half to get the Panthers within nine, 30-21, at halftime.

The Panthers stayed close at the outset of the second half. They got within six on two occasions but the Scots started to pull away. They led by as many as 15, 53-38, with seven minutes left. Vaughn's jumper cut the deficit to 56-47 with 3:39 left. It was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the way.

The Panthers travel to Pensacola Christian on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m. CST.
