Render named to D3hoops.com All-South region team
March 19, 2008
LaGrange senior forward Demetris Render has been named to the D3hoops.com All-South region team. Render was selected to the third team. The team is nominated and voted on by sports information directors at schools in the region. Render was selected earlier for the GSAC All-Conference team. The Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) named Render to it its inaugural NCAA Division III All-State team.

Panthers' season ends with loss to Piedmont in GSAC semifinals

DEMOREST, Ga. - Second-seeded Piedmont College came back for a 75-74 win over third-seeded LaGrange College in the semifinals of the GSAC Championship Tournament on Friday at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. The loss ended the season for the Panthers (6-19), while the Lions (14-12) advance to the championship game Saturday against top-seeded Maryville.

Five Panthers earn GSAC season honors

Senior Demetris Render and junior Joe Cromwell were selected to the GSAC All-Conference team as announced by the conference office Tuesday. Nic Whitfield and Bradley Floyd were named to the GSAC All-Freshman team, while Cromwell and sophomore Britt Gaylor earned GSAC All-Academic honors.

Senior Demetris Render and freshman Nic Whitfield combined for 48 points to lead LaGrange College past Huntingdon College 82-74 at a near capacity Mariotti Gym on Thursday. It was the final regular season game for the Panthers (6-18, 2-4 GSAC), who broke a four-game losing streak. Huntingdon closed out its regular season at 9-16 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Piedmont edges Panthers on last second free throw

DEMOREST, Ga. –Samuel Coppage hit a free throw with 0.4 second left in regulation to lift Piedmont College to an 80-79 GSAC win over LaGrange College at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center on Saturday. The Lions (12-11, 2-3 GSAC) stopped a three-game losing streak and a five-game losing streak to the Panthers (5-18, 1-4 GSAC). The Panthers had defeated the Lions 86-81 on Jan. 26 at Mariotti Gym. Saturday's game featured five ties and 14 lead changes.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - GSAC leader Maryville turned back LaGrange College 85-74 on Saturday. The Panthers fell to 5-17 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Maryville (20-2, 4-0 GSAC) set a new school record with its 13th straight win. LaGrange was led by Demetris Render's 18 points.

Pensacola Christian avenges earlier loss to Panthers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Pensacola Christian College avenged an earlier loss to LaGrange College on Friday night at the Sports Center. The Eagles (8-11) used a big first half run to down the Panthers (5-16) 79-60. LaGrange had won 81-71 the first time the two teams met on Jan. 9. LaGrange got a game-high 29 points from Demetris Render, who had 23 in the second half alone.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern downed LaGrange College 70-52 on Tuesday at Bill Battle Coliseum. It was the fifth loss in the last six games for the Panthers, now 5-15. The host Panthers upped their record to 12-6. Joe Cromwell led LaGrange with a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Fighting Scots improved to 15-2 overall after winning their GSAC opener. The Panthers lost their second straight GSAC game to fall to 0-2 in conference play and 4-12 overall.

ATLANTA – Oglethorpe University took a 95-90 overtime win over LaGrange College on Saturday at Dorough Field House. The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-7 on the season, while the Stormy Petrels improved to 4-2. It was Oglethorpe's second win of the season over the Panthers. The Stormy Petrels won the first meeting 102-66 at the Maryville College Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 24.

The LaGrange College men's basketball team opens its 2007-08 season by hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Mariotti Gym. The Panthers, under sixth-year head coach Warren Haynes, play Emory and Henry at 8 p.m. on Friday and either the consolation game at 2 p.m. or the championship game at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Rust College and Centre College are the other teams in the tournament.

Lawrence participates in Hawks' NBA camp

For a few days, Robby Lawrence was living the NBA life. Lawrence, who graduated from LaGrange College in the spring, was invited to participate in the Atlanta Hawks' mini-camp last week. The four-day camp was for NBA rookies and second-year players, and Lawrence was one of the undrafted free agents asked to take part in the camp.

The award is given annually to an individual who has shown outstanding effort and recognizing their leadership abilities. The Panthers improve to 14-7 and extended their winning streak to six as the Panthers defeated Piedmont, 87-80 on Saturday afternoon.  The Panthers swept the Lions for the first time since 2003-04 and won their third GSAC game (3-1), which is the most in the last two years combined.  The Lions drop to 11-10 on the season.

With two starters out, the Panthers got their first win over the Hawks in 28 years at the "Brick House" and head coach Warren Haynes' first win here in 10 years of affiliation with the Panthers.

Game at Fisk back on Schedule

The LaGrange College men's basketball team will now have Fisk back on the Schedule, as they will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on the Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 11.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. EST.  A make-up game for the Jan. 7 game that was scheduled for Fisk has still yet to be determined.  The Panthers now have 24 games on their schedule.  The Panthers currently are 8-7 on the season, 0-1 in GSAC play.

LaGrange Men's Basketball takes on Rust College in South Region Game this Weekend

The LaGrange College men's basketball team looks to get back on the winning track and break a two-game losing skid against visiting Rust College.  This will be the third straight year these teams have met since the 2004-05 season.  That year the Panthers lost 111-107 at home in a thrilling shootout.  The Panthers hope grab their first-ever win against the Bearcats.
