Panthers drop two games at Maryville tournament

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – LaGrange College dropped two games at the Maryville College Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Panthers (1-4) lost 102-66 to Oglethorpe in the tournament opener and finished with an 89-72 loss to Emory.

Joe Cromwell had a game and season-high 32 points against Emory. He was 15-of-18 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Demetris Render had 12 points and Roger McDowell 11. McDowell had a game-high seven rebounds.

Seth Kramer led Emory (2-3) with 18 points. Spiros Ferderigos added 17 points and John Kresse 12.

Nic Whitfield's basket to open the game gave the Panthers their only lead. Emory led 49-35 at halftime. In the second half, the Eagles led by as many as 22 points.

Oglethorpe (1-0) never trailed in their win over the Panthers on Saturday. The Stormy Petrels led 54-32 at halftime and cruised in the second half. Oglethorpe forced 30 turnovers by the Panthers.

Render led the Panthers with a game-high 16 points. Cromwell added 14 points and Whitfield 11. Oglethorpe placed six players in double-figures. Craig Jackson and Ahmad Kareem Shaheed had 15 points each for the Stormy Petrels.

The Panthers are on the road at Covenant College on Tuesday.
