Huntingdon stops Panthers in GSAC opener Jan. 12, 2008
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Huntingdon College scored the first 10 points of the second half to erase a three-point halftime deficit, en route to a 67-54 victory over LaGrange College in the Great South Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Catherine Dixon Roland Arena.The Hawks improved to 5-10 overall with their third straight win. The Panthers dropped to 4-11 on the season.
Huntingdon held Demetris Render, the GSAC's second leading scorer, to only 12 points. Render, who entered the game averaging 23.5 points per game, also had 10 rebounds. Caleb Smallwood also had 12 points for the Panthers.
The Hawks were led by Jeremy Pittman, who posted his second straight double-double and sixth of the season. Pittman had game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. David Sampleton followed Pittman with 10 points
Huntingdon shot only 31.5 percent from the field, while LaGrange made 36.8 percent of its shots. The Hawks forced 21 turnovers, leading to 26 points
The Panthers led 30-27 at halftime. During the spurt to open the second half, Huntingdon relied on the play of Pittman and Sampleton, as the duo scored all 10 points. The rally gave the Hawks a 37-30 lead with 16:44 remaining in the contest.
LaGrange battled back to tie the score a little more than eight minutes later at 49-49, but the Hawks never relinquished the lead, as they hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:29 to seal the victory.
The Panthers host GSAC foe Maryville College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
