Hampden-Sydney spoils Panthers' New Year's Day Jan. 1, 2008
Hampden-Sydney College spoiled LaGrange College's New Year's Day with a 67-53 win at Mariotti Gym on Tuesday. The Panthers fell to 3-9 on the season with the loss.
The Tigers (5-1) never trailed in the game. Turner King led the Tigers with a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Demetris Render led the Panthers with a game-high 17 points. He moved into 10th place on the Panthers' all-time scoring list. Nic Whitfield followed Render with 16 points.
Hampden-Sydney held the Panthers to 32.7 percent shooting from the field. The Panthers made only 1-of-11 3-point shots in the game.
The Panthers could not overcome a slow start in the first half. Hampden-Sydney scored the game's first seven points. The Panthers did not score until there was 12:53 left in the half. Render broke the scoring ice for the Panthers with a soft jumper.
LaGrange did not make a run at Hampden-Sydney in the first half. The Tigers outscored the Panthers 12-4 over the last six minutes of the half to lead 37-22 at the break. The Panthers shot 28 percent from the field in the first half.
In the second half, the Tigers continued to build their lead. A layup by Jyri Laakso gave Hampden-Sydney its largest lead, 65-38, with five minutes left. The Panthers shaved 13 points off the deficit the rest of the way for the 67-53 final score.
The Panthers host Methodist on Sunday at 2 p.m.
