Panthers fall to Huntingdon in GSAC tournament opener April 24, 2009
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Top-seeded Huntingdon College pulled out a 13-12 win over LaGrange College on the first day of the GSAC tournament at Posey Field. The Panthers fell to 22-17 and face Piedmont in an elimination game Saturday.
The Panthers trailed by as many as six runs early in the game and trailed 11-6 after seven innings. The Panthers got a two-run single from Jordan Martinec in the eighth to make it 11-9 going to the ninth inning.
In the ninth inning, Tyson Sandlin walked to start the inning. Huntingdon reliever Gary Frazier retired the next two batters. Ben Hudson kept the Panthers alive with a single to bring up Korey Ison. Ison drilled the second pitch he saw over the left field fence to put the Panthers up 12-11.
The Hawks came right back in their half of the ninth inning. Hudson came on in relief, the fourth pitcher of the day for the Panthers. He walked leadoff batter Robbie Greer and Chad Green followed with a double. Drew Harrell was intentionally walked to load the bases. Bryant then ended the game with a double to left center, driving in Greer and Green for the 13-12 final.
The two teams combined for 37 hits. The Panthers had 18 hits, led by Martinec and Perez with three each. Five Panthers had two hits each. Ison finished the game with four RBIs.
Trevor Tullock started for the Panthers. He pitched three innings, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs. Drew Williamson followed with three innings. Williamson allowed five runs but only one was earned. J.J. Martone pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
