Millsaps completes weekend sweep of Panthers March 2, 2008
Millsaps College blanked LaGrange College to complete a three-game sweep of a weekend series Sunday at Cleaveland Field. The Majors (10-5) held the Panthers (4-6) to just four hits in winning their fourth straight game. The Panthers fell to 4-6 with their third straight loss and fourth in the last five games.
Millsaps' Tait Hendrix combined with Brandon Ingram and Josh Conlee for the shutout. Hendrix went seven innings, allowing three hits and struck out six without walking a batter. Ingram and Conlee each went an inning, allowing a hit between them.
By design, LaGrange coach Kevin Howard used a large part of his pitching staff in the game. The Panthers used 10 different pitchers in the game. Kegan Bailey started the game and pitched a scoreless first inning. Ryan Martin (0-1) followed Bailey and allowed two runs, one earned, in a third of an inning to take the loss. Chase Sturm, Travis Bragg, David Tillis and J.J. Martone had scoreless stints in relief.
The Majors got all the runs they needed in the second inning to go up 2-0. Billy Murphy had an RBI double off Martin and later scored on a wild pitch. Sean Foster relieved Martin and retired Hunter Abram and Russ Boyd to get out of the inning.
Millsaps added a run in the third inning and two more in the sixth to make it 5-0. Josh Ordenea and Quinn Salmon had run-scoring singles in the innings. The Majors closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Abram had an RBI double in the seventh.
The Panthers got a runner as far as third only once in the game. Brandon Mahoney led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side. He moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Allen and over to third on Jose Navarro's ground out to the right side. Hendrix stranded Mahoney at third by striking out Lee Fite to end the inning.
The Panthers travel to Atlanta to face fifth-ranked Emory University on Tuesday. Game time is 2 p.m.
