Panthers continue hot hitting in 17-4 win over Edgewood March 14, 2008
Patrick Langley and Jimmy Statler each had four hits to pace LaGrange to a 17-4 win over Edgewood at Cleaveland Field on Saturday. It was the fourth win in the past five games for the Panthers (8-8). During this span the Panthers have scored 88 runs.
LaGrange had 20 hits against four Eagle pitchers. Langley scored three runs and had two RBIs. Statler also scored three runs and drove in another. Michael Sims had a two-run home run, the team's first since the second game of the season.
Jeff Tucker evened his record at 2-2 with six strong innings. He allowed seven hits and two runs, only one earned. Tucker struck out three and walked three. Justin Phelps threw two scoreless innings and Seth Harris gave up two runs in the ninth inning.
Edgewood took advantage of three LaGrange errors in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the first on Langley's RBI base hit. They took the lead for good in the second with two runs to go up 3-2. Trey Walker led off with a walk and later scored on an error. Langley's second straight RBI single drove in Statler, who had followed Walker with a single.
LaGrange broke the game wide open in the fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers scored six runs in the fifth to go up 9-2. Statler had a run-scoring double in the inning. Sims hit his first home run of the season with Luis Perez aboard. Cory Matticola finished the inning with a two-run single.
The Panthers exploded for seven more runs in the sixth to make it 16-2. The Panthers sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Matticola had an RBI double in the inning. Seth Tucker and Blake Allen had run-scoring base hits.
Jesse Brown's RBI single in the eighth inning closed out the scoring for LaGrange. Edgewood finished the scoring with two runs in the ninth.
The two teams finish their two-game series Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
