Millsaps out slugs Panthers

JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps College out slugged LaGrange College 18-9 in the Wilson/DeMarini Classic at Twenty Field on Friday. The Panthers (1-1) will face Rhodes College on Saturday as the tournament continues. The host Majors (1-0) play the University of the Ozarks on Saturday.

 

Millsaps got a career-game from senior first baseman Quinn Salmon. Salmon had two home runs in the game, finishing 4-for-5 with nine RBIs. He had an inside-the-park home run in the third and a grand slam in the fourth inning to help break the game open. The Majors finished the game with 17 hits and took advantage of 10 walks issued by Panther pitching. Seven of the 10 runners who walked later scored.

 

LaGrange had 11 hits in the game. Blake Allen and Korey Ison each had a three-run home run in the game. Michael Sims, Seth Tucker and Corey Matticola all had two hits.

 

Ben Hudson (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers. He pitched the first three innings, allowing four runs, three earned. Hudson walked one and struck out two. Jonathan Chapman, Ryan Martin, Kegan Bailey, Curt Ellison and Sims all pitched in relief.

 

The Majors scored in all but one inning. They led 4-0 after the first three innings. The Panthers put the lead runner on in the first three innings but could not get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning.

 

Matticola led off the inning with a double. Trey Walker kept the inning going with a two-out single, as Matticola held up at third. Blake Allen followed his home run, clearing the left field fence to make it 4-3.

 

Millsaps answered with Salmon's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth. The Majors added five more runs in the fifth to open up a 13-3 lead.

 

The Panthers got back in the game in the seventh inning. They loaded the bases with one out. Patrick Langley singled through the right side to drive in two runs. Matticola followed with an RBI single. Ison, entering the game as a pinch-hitter, capped the inning with his home run to center field to make it 13-9.

 

The Majors came back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth for the 18-9 final. Salmon capped his game with an RBI single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
