Ozarks uses big inning to get past Panthers

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of the Ozarks did all of its scoring in one inning and went on to a 6-3 win over LaGrange College on Sunday in the Wilson/DeMarini Classic at Millsaps College. The Panthers (2-2) finished the tournament 1-2. Ozarks (2-1) went 2-1 in the tournament.

Bruce Cameron pitched into the seventh inning to get the win for Ozarks. He held the Panthers, who had scored 34 runs in three previous games, to two runs and six hits. Kyle Hudson got the final out for his first save of the season.

 

Jeff Tucker took the loss in his first start of the season for the Panthers. Tucker allowed all six runs, five of them earned, in 4-2/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out one. Patrick Shivers pitched 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Shivers allowed only a hit, walked one and struck out. Rad Mitchell pitched the final two outs of the eighth inning.

 

After a scoreless first three innings, Ozarks struck in the fourth inning for all of their runs. Robby Finnell was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He came around to score on Todd Koch's triple to center field. Koch also scored on the play when the relay from the outfield went into the Eagles' dugout. Leading 3-0, the Eagles got three straight RBI singles from John Glenn, Logan Kizer and Finnell. Shivers relieved Tucker with two out and the bases loaded. He struck out Brad Broussard to end the inning.

 

The Panthers got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. In the fifth, Craig Mobley doubled with two outs. Corbin Clinage followed with a base hit up the middle to score Mobley. The Panthers cut the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth. Pat Langley doubled to left center and scored on Corey Matticola's single to center.

 

It stayed 6-2 until the ninth inning. Korey Ison led off the inning with a single off reliever Brett Wood. Pinch hitter Trey Walker reached on fielder's choice as Ison was thrown out at second. Brandon Mahoney, also pinch hitting, doubled off the right field fence to score Walker to make it 6-3. Hudson came in and got Clinage to ground out to end the game.

 

The Panthers finished the game with eight hits. Langley and Clinage each had two hits in the game. Finnell led Ozarks' with two hits, as the Eagles finished with seven.

 

The Panthers are on the road next Friday and Saturday at Louisiana College.
