Maryville stops Panthers' bid for second straight GSAC title

MARYVILLE, Tenn.- LaGrange College's bid for a second straight GSAC championship came up one game short. Host Maryville College downed the Panthers 13-6 in the final and deciding game Sunday for its first conference title since 2002. Eric Hite's two-run home run in the fifth inning broke a 5-5 tie and Maryville never trailed again. The Scots banged out 20 hits against five Panther pitchers.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – LaGrange College reached the championship game of the GSAC Championship Tournament with a dramatic come-from-behind extra inning 11-10 win over Huntingdon on Saturday. The Panthers face host Maryville on Sunday for the conference title. The defending champion Panthers (27-16) must beat Maryville twice Sunday to successfully defend their title. The loss ended top-seeded Huntingdon's season. The Panthers had lost 14-9 to the Hawks (26-17) in their tournament opener Friday.

Panthers avoid elimination at GSAC tournament

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange College avoided elimination with a 7-2 win over second-seeded Piedmont at the GSAC Championship Tournament on Saturday. The Panthers (26-16) play the Huntingdon/Maryville loser later in the evening in the loser's bracket final. Piedmont (19-22) was eliminated from the tournament. Freshman pitcher Nick Vitale (4-0) led the Panthers. He pitched a complete-game five hitter, walking three and striking out six. Vitale was helped by a defense that turned two double plays in the game.

LaGrange College finished the regular season with a 10-0 loss to No. 4 Emory at Cleaveland Field on Wednesday. The loss was the third in the last four games for the Panthers (25-15). The Eagles improved to 33-7 with their second win in as many games this season against the Panthers. It was Senior Night for four Panthers. Tim Canady, Jeremy Dockins, Joey Merrifield and Shaun O'Hara were honored in pre-game ceremonies.

DEMOREST, Ga. - LaGrange College avoided being swept by Piedmont with a 6-3 win at Loudermilk Field on Sunday. It was the final game of a three-game GSAC series between the two teams. The loss prevented Piedmont (19-21, 5-4 GSAC) from winning the conference's regular season title. The Lions will share the title with Huntingdon and Maryville.

LaGrange College swept a doubleheader from Oglethorpe on Tuesday at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers (22-12) won the first game 13-6 and completed the sweep of the Stormy Petrels (10-30) with a 4-1 win in the nightcap. The Panthers got complete pitching performances out of junior Seth Harris (1-1) and freshman Nick Vitale (2-0).

LaGrange College picked up its first GSAC win of the season, beating Huntingdon 12-2 at Cleaveland Field on Friday. The Panthers (19-11, 1-3 GSAC) extended their season-high winning streak to six games. With the loss, Huntingdon (20-11, 4-3) fell out of a tie for the conference lead with Maryville. Freshman Nick Vitale (1-0), making his second start of the season, got his first collegiate win.

LaGrange College got a record-setting performance from Tim Canady in beating Rhodes College 9-1 at Cleaveland Field on Monday. It was the fourth straight win for the Panthers, now 17-11. Rhodes dropped to 30-5. Canady (4-3) set a school record with 16 strikeouts in going the distance for the Panthers.

PASADENA, Calif. - LaGrange College completed a perfect Spring Break trip with a 27-3 win over Cal Tech on Thursday. The Panthers finished their trip 3-0 as they improved to 16-11 on the season.The Panthers scored 11 runs in the first inning and cruised from there. Coach Kevin Howard substituted freely in the game, playing 24 players in the game.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College 11-5 at Arce Field on Wednesday. It was the second straight win for the Panthers, now 15-11. The Panthers had trailed 5-4 since the third inning before exploding in the ninth. They had left the bases loaded in the seventh inning and left two more runners on in the eighth.

LaGrange College cruised to a 17-2 win over Clark Atlanta University at Cleaveland Field on Tuesday. It was the sixth straight win for the Panthers, now 13-7. The Panthers have won 13 of their last 16 games.
Sophomore Korey Ison and freshman Robbie Shelton combined for six hits and six RBIs in the game. Ison hit his first home run of the season and his collegiate career. The Panthers finished with 17 hits.

The Panthers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings. They led 11-0 before the Colonels scored all of their runs in the eighth inning.

Hampden-Sydney (8-11) lost its third straight game, all to GSAC schools. Hampden-Sydney committed five errors in the game. The Panthers turned the mistakes into three unearned runs. The Panthers did not commit an error in the game.

It was the first shutout of the season for the Panthers.

Oglethorpe University took advantage of LaGrange College miscues for a 10-7 win at Cleaveland Field on Tuesday. It was the season-opener for both teams. The Panthers blew an early 6-0 lead with the help of a school-record nine errors. The mistakes led to nine unearned runs for the Stormy Petrels.
