Unbeaten Panthers edge Atlanta Christian
Feb. 14, 2006

LaGrange College remained unbeaten with a 6-5 win over Atlanta Christian College at Cleaveland Field on Tuesday. Evan Smith's base hit in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Panthers' season record to 5-0. It was the season opener for the Chargers.

Atlanta Christian had rallied in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Trailing 5-3, the Chargers got a lead off walk from Louie Leake off reliever Justin Phelps. Joey Merrifield relieved Phelps after Leake's walk. Merrifield got two outs, but a wild pitch and a clutch hit from Jonathan Roesel plated two runs, tying the game 5-5.

In the Panthers' half of the ninth, Seth Tucker led off by reaching on an error by reliever and loser Bryan Young. He stole second and moved over to third on Jimmy Statler's bunt single. Jesse Brown was intentionally walked to load the bases. Smith came up and punched a single past a drawn in infield, scoring Tucker with the winning run.

The Panthers had taken a 3-0 after three innings. Michael Sims led off the first with an infield hit, stole second and stole third before scoring on Tucker's ground out. In the third, Sims had an RBI single, while Jimmy Statler drove in a run later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Chargers touched starter Jacob Sanders for two runs in the fourth inning, but ran themselves out of a possible bigger inning. The Chargers had two runs already in, the bases loaded and only one out. Josh Usury was picked off third base for the second out and Sims threw out Chris Thomason trying to score from second on a base hit to center to end the inning.
