From the Studio to the Stage: Applying Watercolor Technique to Scenic Painting
January 2008
Professors Nathan Tomsheck, Department of Theatre Arts, and Margaret Reneke, Department of Art & Design, combine their artistic talents to demonstrate one of the many places where theatre and art intersect. Traditional scenic painting is found in theatre, opera, ballet, and museum exhibitions. Students learn the art of scenic painting by exploring watercolor technique and color theory as they develop a series of watercolor paintings as studies for full scale drops. The process continues as students learn to transfer their work to drops they themselves cut, piece, sew, and size. Finished drops are flown and fully lit for display.
