Steven Earl-Edwards
Professor of Theatre Arts

He received an Multidisciplinary Doctorate of Fine Arts with emphasis in Theatre Arts (Theatre Management and Screen & Playwriting) from Texas Tech University. He received his Master of Arts in Drama from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, his Bachelor of Arts in English & Speech from Texas Wesleyan University, and special studies and certification in Dramatic Interpretation from the University of Texas at Austin.

His professional experience spans more than twenty years as actor, director, and producer. Dr. Edwards is a member of Actors Equity Association, the Screen Actors Guild, The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Dramatists Guild. Briefly stated, his experience in New York includes on camera principal spokesperson on national and international commercials for such clients as Polaroid, Xerox, Hanes, Coast Soap, Kaliber Beer, and Levi's. He appeared as the "Sheriff of Lanview" on ABC's One Life To Live, and was a featured actor in A Circle On The Cross, winner of the 1988 New York Drama League's Award for Best Play.

A stage combat instructor and former member of the Society of American Fight Directors, Dr. Edwards was also an original founding member of the highly acclaimed "Fights R Us" in New York. His fight choreography has been seen on every East coast soap opera, and includes fight instruction for Barry Corbin on CBS's Northern Exposure. His specialty areas include rapier & dagger, quarterstaff, broadsword, unarmed fighting techniques, and horsemanship.  He continues to train in Aikido at the Newnan Budokan, and in Shotokan Karate privately with William Yin in LaGrange.  Dr. Edwards made his New York debut as "Melvin P. Thorpe" in The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, directed by Tommy Tune and Peter Masterson, and was featured in subsequent productions of the Las Vegas, National Tour, and Stock companies opposite such stars as Barbara Eden and Edie Adams. He has also worked with, or appeared opposite such talent as Tommy Tune, Pete Masterson, Kim Zimmer, Terrence Mann, Orson Bean, and Larry Drake. 

As co-owner of Ed-Man Productions in New York, he co-produced two Japanese music videos, which received two Silver Awards at the Houston International Film and Video Festival. Dr. Edwards continues to perform and direct professionally, and has served on the Governor's Committee for the Georgia Council for the Arts as a Theatre Panelist. He is a past chair of the Professional Division of the Georgia Theatre Conference.

Dr. Edwards received awards for Best Director and Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Eugene O'Neill's last play, HUGHIE, at the Belfast Festival Fringe, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was a guest on BBC Digital Cable which televised excerpts from the play, and on Radio Ulster which also aired the production. While in Northern Ireland, he also conducted workshops in stage combat and acting for students and community theatre artists in LaGrange's sister city of Craigavon, and other cities throughout Northern Ireland.

Dr. Edwards has co-authored two full-length musicals, THE ADVENTURES OF MAID MARIAN, and A CHRISTMAS DANCE, and co-wrote the libretto for the New York based Goliard Musical Ensemble, for their tour of WORDSMITH. He co-authored the screenplay A CIRCLE ON THE CROSS, and appears in the film opposite Broadway veteran Terrence Mann. The film will begin its tour of film festivals starting late fall of 2008.

At LaGrange College, Dr. Edwards primarily teaches Stage Combat, Play/Screenwriting, Theatre Management, Musical Theatre, Auditioning, Beginning and Advanced Acting and Drama Survey.

Dr. Edwards currently serves as the Resident Director for The LaGrange Lyric Theatre.
