Come to LaGrange and see the world!
The Interim, or ‘Jan Term,’ is the middle of LaGrange College’s 4-1-4 academic calendar. Interim courses are designed to encourage students to explore course content outside of their majors through personal, hands-on experience. Courses include on-campus projects, independent research, internships and study-travel experiences.
In 2010, one class traveled to France to study that country’s culture of food and its sustainability efforts. The students wrote a blog about their experiences (as did students from five other classes). To read the blogs from Italy, Costa Rica and New York, as well as observations from an intern at Roosevelt’s Little White House, students of horror films and future negotiators, visit www.lagrange.edu/blogs.
A quick list of some of the courses scheduled for Jan Term 2011 includes:
- Participants in The Ireland of Yeats and Joyce will take a journey through the mythical and actual terrains of two of Ireland’s most celebrated writers, William Butler Yeats and James Joyce, including visits to Dublin, Galway and Sligo.
- Dr. Dorothy Joiner’s The Art and Architecture of China class will feature a two-week trip to Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai, visiting The Forbidden Palace, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall and the Xi’an Warriors.
- Students in The Art and Beauty of Barcelona course will learn about the creative and artistic genius displayed in the works of Gaudi, visit the museums of Picasso, Miro and Dali, or simply savor tapas while people-watching.
- Dr. Linda Buchanan will take students from D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge, looking at the military importance of the Allied Invasion of 1944 and the social and cultural history of the northern regions of France.
- Dr. Celia Hay will take students to London, where they will explore Nursing Since Nightingale, using nursing’s history as a framework for analyzing the evolution of nursing care since the Victorian era of Florence Nightingale.
- Students in Dr. Sarah Beth Mallory’s Exploring Animal Behavior will work with Zoo Atlanta experts before traveling to Costa Rica to observe animals in the wild.
