Don't assume that teaching is the only career option for those majoring in English. The subject provides excellent preparation for a range of fields from law to public service. While many dedicated people find teaching to be a satisfying career, there is documentary evidence "that training in English and literature, particularly at the college level, is invaluable preparation for futures in four outstanding professionals areas: law, medicine, business, and federal service" [See English: The Preprofessional Major by Linwood Orange. This pamphlet, published in its fourth edition by the Modern Language Association of America, 1986, is available in the Department of English Language and Literature and in the Office of Admission.]
